The Eye-Pal SOLO LV is not only a scanner/reading machine but is also an electronic magnifier too. When used as a reading machine the device begins reading automatically as soon as any printed materials are placed onto the base of the device underneath the camera. By use of hand motions it is possible to start and stop the reading of text by the user just waving their hand underneath the camera. When a user just wants to use the reading aspect of the machine all they need to do is take the Eye-Pal SOLO LV out of the box and plug it into a power supply, after a placing the document onto the base of the device the document will be read out loud, however when the user want to use the device as a magnifier the process is slightly different.
To use the Eye-Pal SOLO LV as a magnifier the device needs to be connected to a monitor or a screen, then the user simply has to place their document underneath the camera and then the printed text will appear on the screen after a few seconds. Text can be listened to by the user and they can also follow it on the screen too. Using the simple tactile keypad it is possible to control the magnification level, viewing mode (black on white, white on black etc), whether or not words a read by sentence or by word and also whether a page is saved to read later. By using the device as a magnifier/reader it is possible to fill out forms - have the contents of the form read aloud while using the magnifier to hand write into text boxes. However, it is not possible for this device to read handwriting despite aiding with handwriting tasks.
The keypad has been designed to be as user friendly as possible with its tactile and compact design. A user does not need to worry about remembering the functions of the keys - they can find out what a particular key does by simply pressing down on that key and pressing the help button at the same time.
