With the latest OCR technology, Snow 12 can recognize any of 20+ different languages and convert printed words into speech. Changing the reading speed can be done on the fly. When you need to change settings in Snow 12, you can browse through the menu of choices by tapping the on-screen button you want, or by stepping through them with physical buttons on Snow 12. Best of all, Snow 12 speaks to you as you move over on-screen buttons or select them. The ability to use buttons to control and configure Snow 12 is ideal even for the most severely visually impaired. The verbal feedback is helpful too, especially when using Snow 12 for the first time.

When connected to a Windows® PC, Snow 12 appears as an external storage device. You can copy over books and other documents in JPG, PDF, RTF, and TXT formats to the memory storage of Snow 12. Documents in JPG and PDF become available immediately for magnified reading. You can also open the documents in all 4 formats within the text-to-speech mode and have words spoken out loud.
A standard headphone port lets you listen to spoken books and documents without disturbing others.

I am 88 years old, with dry AMD in one eye with which I can read very little and wet AMD in the other eye in which I have monthly lucentis injections. I am finding this device invaluable. It really does do what it says on the tin. I keep it on my desk on its stand and always plugged in. I am all the time popping items I cannot normally read under it and I can usually read them without difficulty. It is very, very easy to use. The controls are very simple and well thought out, and the read from text facility works very well. I think I will be using this more and more as my sight gets worse. Writing a cheque for example with it takes a bit of getting used to, but it is much easier than unaided. There is an excellent series of instructional videos on the Zoomax site, well worth looking at if you are thinking of buying. I have knocked one star off for two reasons. One, at the moment it cannot be used in tandem with my iMac, although I do not find this a great disadvantage as the Accessibility features on the Mac are so good. And secondly, I don’t find it as useful if not on the stand as you cannot slide even a single sheet of paper under it. That is a bit restricting, but on the ingenious stand , no problem. It is not cheap, but in my view well worth it.
