Disabled Students’ Allowance (DSA) – Tailored Support from VisionAid

What is DSA?

Disabled Students’ Allowance (DSA) is a non-repayable grant from the UK Government that helps you pay for essential support during your studies—far beyond what typical student finance covers—and it’s based on your individual needs, not your household income.

Depending on your needs, DSA can fund:

  • Specialist equipment (e.g. laptops, software, ergonomic aids)
  • Non‑medical help (e.g. note‑takers, BSL interpreters, study skills tutors)
  • Disability‑related travel costs (e.g. taxis if public transport isn’t accessible)
  • Additional study support (e.g. extra printing or materials)

How Much Can You Get?

For the 2025–2026 academic year, undergraduate and postgraduate students may receive up to £27,783 per year toward approved support.

How to Apply for DSA

1. Apply for DSA through your Student Finance account, or submit a DSA1 form if you're applying separately.

2. If approved, you’ll attend a Needs Assessment (remote or in-person)—a friendly chat to identify the exact support you need.

3. You’ll receive a Needs Assessment Report (NAR) that outlines recommended support and the entitlement letter confirming your award. Suppliers (like us) then deliver the agreed support.

How VisionAid Helps You Get the Right DSA Support—Fast

1. Free In-Depth Needs Assessments

Whether you prefer remote or in-person, our assessments focus on your course and individual needs. We take time to understand your study environment, challenges, and goals—like how a dyslexia-friendly OCR tool or ergonomic hardware can make a real difference.

2. We Liaise Directly with Your Assigned Assessor

Think of us as your personal support allies—we talk directly with your DSA-assigned assessor to clarify course demands and ensure recommendations align with your curriculum, whether it’s hands-on study that requires a wearable magnifier or study that requires tactile braille output.

3. Tailored Solution Recommendations

Based on the Needs Assessment Report, we’ll suggest the best mix of technology and support—like reading software, speech-to-text tools, or specialist hardware—that responds directly to your study challenges.

4. Seamless Coordination

We handle everything from quotes to invoicing, liaising with Student Finance or your assessor to ensure all the right tech and support is approved and delivered smoothly.
